Voters seem to be a little less sure this month that President Obama will bring U.S. combat troops home from Iraq by the end of his first term as he has long promised. Fifty-eight percent (58%) of U.S. voters now say the president is likely to do so, with 28% who say it is Very Likely. But this is the first time the overall number has fallen below 60% since Obama was elected in early November. Thirty-four percent (34%) say the president is not likely to bring the troops home in the next four years, according to a new Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey. This is the highest that number has been since Rasmussen Reports began surveying on the question in November (see trends). Just last month, 63% of voters said Obama was likely to bring all combat troops home from Iraq by the end of his first term, while 33% said he was not very or not at all likely to accomplish that goal. Also down is the number who say getting the troops home from Iraq is more important to the president that finishing the mission there. Now 53% say bringing the troops home is Obama’s priority. That’s down nine points from 62% a month ago. Thirty percent (30%) now say he puts finishing the mission first. (Want a free daily e-mail update? Sign up now. If it's in the news, it's in our polls.) While 77% of Democrats say Obama is likely to bring all the combat troops home from Iraq in the next four years, just 43% of Republicans and 51% of voters not affiliated with either party agree. Most Americans (51%) rate the president’s job performance in the area of national security as good or excellent. Voter confidence in America’s handling of the War on Terror is up slightly this week after falling two weeks earlier.
