President Bush's Press Conference had a modestly positive impact on public perceptions in Iraq. On the two nights following the Press Conference, 46% say the U.S. is safer today than it was before 9/11. Just 39% disagree. Those figures represent a net improvement of eight points compared to data collected before the Press Conference. At that time, just 41% said the U.S. was safer and 42% said it was not. Forty-four percent (44%) of Americans now believe that the best way to fight terrorism is to let the terrorists know we will fight back aggressively. Forty-eight percent (48%) say the best approach is to work with other nations to find an international solution. There is a huge gender gap on the way to approach the War on Terror. Men, by a 53% to 41% margin, say letting terrorists know we will fight back aggressively is the best approach. Women, by a 54% to 36% margin, say it's best to work with other nations. Fifty-eight percent (58%) now say it is somewhat or very likely that the U.S. mission in Iraq will ultimately be successful. That's the same as the number leading up to the Press Conference. The number of Americans who believe we will capture or kill Osama bin Laden has declined to 31% following the Press Conference. Earlier in the week, 34% thought we would catch the world's most wanted terrorist.
