Fifty-two percent (52%) of Americans say that the War with Iraq is part of the broader War on Terror. A Rasmussen Reports survey found that 41% take the opposite view and believe that it is a diversion from the Terror War. Forty-six percent (46%) believe that establishing a free and peaceful Iraq is more important than capturing Osama bin Laden. Forty percent (40%) believe capturing bin Laden is more important. Eighty-three percent (83%) of voters believe it is "somewhat" or "very" important for Iraq to have elections as scheduled in January. However, a somewhat smaller number (69%) believe it is "somewhat" or "very" likely that the elections will be held as planned. Fifty-nine percent (59%) say that the Iraqi people are better off today than they were when Saddam Hussein was in charge. Fourteen percent (14%) say life for the Iraqi people is pretty much the same today as it was under Hussein. There is an enormous gap on this question between voters who favor Bush and those who support Kerry. By a 94% to 2% margin, Bush voters believe the Iraqi people are better off today. However, among Kerry voters, 34% say that the Iraqi people were better off under Hussein. Just 26% say Iraq's residents are better off today while 24% say things are about the same. A separate survey found that 54% favor leaving U.S. troops in Iraq until that country's political situation has stabilized.
