Forty-nine percent (49%) of Americans now believe the U.S. is safer than it was before the 9/11 terrorist attacks. That's up six-points from mid-July and up thirteen-points improvement since our sovereignty was transferred to Iraq. Thirty-seven percent (37%) disagree and say the U.S. is not safer today. It is no coincidence that President Bush's standing in the election polls has improved as perceptions of safety have improved. Fifty-five percent (55%) of men now say the U.S. is safer while 34% say it is not. Forty-three percent (43%) of women say the U.S. is safer while 41% say it is not. Forty-five percent (45%) of all voters say it is somewhat or very likely that Iraq will become a peaceful nation enjoying the benefits of freedom and democracy. That's up a bit from 42% in July. Forty-nine percent (49%) of voters are more pessimistic and say Iraq is not very likely or not at all likely to be so fortunate. That's down from 55% in July. Conservatives are more optimistic about Iraq's chances for success than liberals. Demographic information is available for Premium Members. Sixty percent (60%) believe it is somewhat or very likely that there will be a significant terrorist attack in the United States over the next few months. That figure is little changed from earlier surveys.
