Forty-three percent (43%) of Americans now believe the U.S. is safer than it was before the 9/11 terrorist attacks. That's a seven-point improvement since our late-June survey. The earlier Rasmussen Reports survey was conducted on the two nights following the formal transfer of sovereignty to Iraq. Forty-six percent (46%) of men now say the U.S. is safer while 42% say it is not. A month ago, those numbers were 39% and 42% respectively. Forty-percent (40%) of women say the U.S. is safer while 41% say it is not. A month ago, just 34% of women said safer while 47% disagreed. Forty-two percent (42%) of all voters say it is somewhat or very likely that Iraq will become a peaceful nation enjoying the benefits of freedom and democracy. Most voters are more pessimistic--54% say Iraq is not very likely or not at all likely to be so fortunate. These numbers are little changed from our late-June survey and the month before. Conservatives are more optimistic about Iraq's chances for success than liberals. Demographic information is available for Premium Members. Sixty percent (60%) believe it is somewhat or very likely that there will be a significant terrorist attack in the United States over the next few months. That figure is little changed from earlier surveys.
