After a month of major legislation by the White House and Congress to try to fix the struggling economy, more voters trust the Democratic Party to handle economic issues than they did a month ago. The latest Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey found that 47% trust Democrats more on the economy, while 40% trust the Republican Party more. Last month, voters trusted Barack Obama’s party more by a 44% to 39% margin. One important shift was among men, who trusted the GOP more on the issue last month by a 45% to 39% margin. This month, they trust Democrats more by a 48% to 40% margin. Women trust Democrats more on economic issues by a 47% to 41 margin, which has tightened somewhat over the past month. Despite some strong opposition to his recent decisions on the economy, President Obama still earns positive ratings on his handling of the situation from 51% of voters nationwide. A third (32%) now say the president is doing a poor job on the economy. However, the GOP leads by three percentage points on the issue of taxes for the second straight month. While 46% say they trust Republicans more to handle taxes, 43% say that of Democrats. (Want a free daily e-mail update? Sign up now. If it's in the news, it's in our polls.) Rasmussen Reports updates also available on Twitter. The only other issue voters trust the GOP more on is national security, by a 47% to 41% margin. Those numbers haven’t changed since February. While the economy has been at the center of the news in recent months, a separate survey found that 41% of voters believe America’s preoccupation with this issue makes the country more vulnerable to another terrorist attack. Confidence in how America is doing in the War on Terror dropped dramatically in late February, but it is not yet clear whether the numbers are a statistical blip or a reflection of recent news developments. The parties are close on several issues, including the War in Iraq, where the Democrats hold just a single-point lead. In February, the GOP trailed by two points on the issue. The Republicans have not held the advantage on the War since last September. Democrats now lead Republicans on the issue of immigration 38% to 36%, representing a shift from the two-point lead the GOP held last month. The parties are also close on the issue of abortion. Democrats now hold a 42% to 40% lead on the issue. After the president announced he is lifting the ban on federal funding for stem cell research, a Rasmussen survey found that 29% of voters find the science to be morally wrong. Most voters who consider themselves to be pro-life on the issue of abortion think this way. The Democrats continue to hold double-digit leads on the issues of health care, education, and government ethics and corruption.
