This month, voters trust Democrats more than Republicans on nine out of ten issues, including National Security. The latest Rasmussen Reports national telephone surveys also found that the economy is still the top issue among voters in this year’s election. See table summarizing results.

The Democrats now have the advantage on the top three issues in term of importance to voters. The party leads by a twelve-point margin on the economy, an issue very important to 79% of voters. That’s down slightly from last month, when 83% saw the economy as a very important issue.

National Security has moved up to the second most important issue to voters, and is usually the issue the Republican party shows the greatest strength. The GOP has held the advantage on the issue in seven out of the last ten national polls, but this month the Democrats have 48% to 44% lead. National Security is a very important issue for 66% of voters, up from 61% last month. A separate national survey finds that half of all voters believe the United States and its allies are winning the War on Terror.

Just behind National Security is Government Ethics and Corruption, an issue very important to 65% of voters. Democrats usually outperform the GOP brand on this issue, and this month is no different. Obama’s party holds a 44% to 28% advantage on this issue.

It is also worth noting that while Democrats have an advantage over Republicans on these issues, things look much different when John McCain is compared to Barack Obama.

Education, Health care, and the War in Iraq are very important issues for 59% of voters nationwide, and Democrats are trusted more on all three. Last month, the GOP had a statistically insignificant one-percentage point lead on Iraq, but this month the Democrats are ahead by nine points. The latest survey on the war finds that the number of Americans who believe it is possible for the U.S. to win the war has grown over the past year. Democrats have a ten point lead on education and a fifteen point lead on Health care.

The only issue the GOP holds an advantage on is taxes, an issue very important to 55% of voters.

The issue of Social Security is very important to 55% of voters, and Democrats are trusted more by a 45% to 37% margin.

A survey released yesterday finds that most voters still believe in the Social Security system and think individuals should have to pay taxes on most or all of their income.
