The numbers have flipped this week in the latest edition of the Generic Congressional Ballot. The latest Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey found that 40% would vote for their district’s Democratic congressional candidate while 39% would choose the Republican. For the last two weeks, the GOP held a 40% to 39% advantage. Still, support for Democrats is just two points higher than the lowest level found over the past year. Support for the GOP is two points below its highest level during that period. (Want a free daily e-mail update? If it's in the news, it's in our polls). Rasmussen Reports updates also available on Twitter. Over the past year, Democratic support has ranged from a low of 38% to a high of 50%. In that same time period, Republicans have been preferred by 34% to 41% of voters nationwide. During calendar 2009, Democratic support has ranged from 38% to 42%, while the Republican range has been from 35% to 41%. Democrats began the year holding a six- or seven-point lead over the GOP for the first several weeks of 2009. That began to slip in early February, and the Republicans actually took a two-point lead for a single week in the middle of March. Since then, the results have ranged from dead even to a four-point lead for the Democrats until the GOP regained the lead. Men favor the GOP 44% to 35%, while women favor the Democrats by the exact same margin. Voters not affiliated with either party favor the GOP by a 38% to 22% margin. Recent Rasmussen polling finds that only 37% of GOP voters now see their party as leaderless. That’s down from 68% just two months ago. LINK As Congress reviews President Obama’s health care plan, 42% of Americans support free universal health care, but just 27% support it if it means having to switch from their current insurance coverage to a plan run by the federal government. Other polling finds that just 38% of voters agree with former Vice President Dick Cheney that Obama has made the country less safe through his changes on national security.
