Despite a dominant performance on Election Day, Democrats held just a three point advantage in the Generic Congressional Ballot for the full month of November. Overall, Rasmussen Reports national telephone surveys found that 43% would vote for their district’s Democratic candidate, while 40% would choose the Republican candidate.

The week prior to Election Day, the Democrats held a six-point lead over the GOP. The gap tightened to just two points the following week, after the Democrats won all incumbent seats and gained several more to reach 58 Senate seats.

Over the past year, Democratic support has ranged from a low of 43% to a high of 50%. Over that same time period, Republicans have been preferred by 34% to 41% of voters nationwide.

In November, men favored the GOP 42% to 40%, while women chose Democrats 46% to 38%.

White voters chose the GOP by a 45% to 39% margin, while black voters overwhelmingly favored the Democrats, 76% to 13%.

Among unaffiliated voters, 37% would choose their Republican candidate, while 29% would vote Democratic.

In November, 41.4% of Americans considered themselves to be Democrats, 33.8% said they were Republicans, and 24.7% were not affiliated with either major political party.

Also during that month, 14% of American adults said they Strongly Approved of the way that George W. Bush performed his job as president. Forty-five percent (45%) Strongly Disapproved. That gives the President a -31 rating on the Presidential Approval Index.
