62% in Illinois Say Burris Should Resign

The fallout from the Rod Blagojevich scandal continues in Illinois. Sixty-two percent (62%) of Illinois voters say Roland Burris, the man the disgraced governor named to Barack Obama’s Senate seat, should resign. Just 24% believe Burris should remain in the Senate, according to a new Rasmussen Reports survey of voters in the state. Fifty-four percent (54%) say they will definitely vote against Burris if he chooses to run for a full six-year term in the Senate in 2010. Only four percent (4%) say they will definitely vote for him. Thirty-nine percent (39%) say it depends upon who he is running against. Only 19% have a favorable opinion of Burris. Jesse Jackson Jr. continues to fall following a Chicago Sun-Times report that federal investigators are pursuing claims that associates of his offered Blagojevich up to $5 million if he named the Chicago congressman to Obama’s Senate post. Seventy-five percent (75%) say it is at least somewhat likely that Jackson was aware of the alleged offer to raise $5 million for Blagojevich in exchange for the appointment to the Senate. Forty-two percent (42%) say it is Very Likely Jackson knew about the offer. Fourteen percent (14%) say it’s not likely that Jackson knew. Following last November’s election, Jackson was initially the most popular choice to take Obama’s place in the Senate. But now 63% of Illinois voters have an unfavorable opinion of him, including 33% whose view is Very Unfavorable. Thirty-two percent (32%) view the congressman favorably, with just seven percent (7%) Very Favorable. Eighty-four percent (84%) say they have followed news reports about Blagojevich and Jackson at least somewhat closely. Republicans and voters not affiliated with either party are far more likely to be critical of Burris and Jackson, but a majority of Democrats agree with them. Blagojevich, Burris and Jackson are all Democrats. Blagojevich was caught on federal wiretaps soliciting payment in exchange for the Senate seat, although he has denied that he was seeking a bribe. The state Senate impeached him and removed him from office. Sixty-four percent (64%) of Illinois voters say the Senate gave Blagojevich a fair trial. Jackson has said he is cooperating with investigating authorities and denies any knowledge of the $5 million offer. Seventy-four percent (74%) of the state’s voters say future Senate vacancies should be filled by special election. Only18% believe the governor should appoint the replacement. Sixty-one percent (61%) approve of former Lieutenant Governor Pat Quinn’s job performance as Blagojevich’s replacement. Thirty-seven percent (37%) disapprove. Sixty-four percent (64%) of Illinois voters blame politicians for the corruption in the state. Nineteen percent (19%) say “the system” is too blame. Nine percent (9%) attribute it to voters themselves, and two percent (2%) blame the media. By contrast with his fellow Democrats, the state’s senior senator, Dick Durbin, is viewed favorably by 56% of Illinois voters and unfavorably by 36%. Sixty-seven percent (67%) approve of Obama’s performance as president, while 33% disapprove.
