Voters Think Platforms More Important Than Money to Win Elections

As midterm elections approach, voters are strong believers in quality over quantity, in that a candidate’s positions have more weight than their pocketbook.

A new Rasmussen Reports national telephone and online survey finds that 79% of Likely U.S. Voters think a candidate’s political positions are more important in determining the outcome of most elections than how much money he or she has to spend. This is up significantly from 63% a year ago and 67% in 2015, but is in line with the 75% who felt the same way in 2010.

Just 13% disagree and think how much money a candidate spends is more important to an election, down 10 points from 2017. (To see survey question wording, click here.)

The survey of 1,000 Likely Voters was conducted on September 5-6, 2018 by Rasmussen Reports. The margin of sampling error is +/- 3 percentage points with a 95% level of confidence. Field work for all Rasmussen Reports surveys is conducted by Pulse Opinion Research, LLC. See methodology.
