Voters remain pessimistic about America’s future role in the world. A new Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey finds that only 30% of voters believe that the United States will be the most powerful nation in the world at the end of the 21st Century, down seven points from the beginning of the year. Thirty-six percent (36%) think America will not be number one at the close of the century, and 34% are undecided. These numbers have been largely the same since March. Republicans remain the most pessimistic. Nearly half (47%) of GOP voters say America will not be the world’s most powerful nation by the end of the century, a view shared by only 29% of Democrats and 34% of voters not affiliated with either major party. Forty percent (40%) of voters now believe America’s best days are in the future, but 45% say those days have come and gone. Just 33% of voters say the United States is heading in the right direction. Most voters (63%) continue to believe the nation is heading down the wrong track. Only 43% of voters believe the United States and its allies are winning the war on terror, down 12 points from the week President Obama took office in January. Forty-nine percent (49%) of Americans now say that the U.S. economy will be stronger in five years than it is today. That’s down from 64% in March. But just 14% of Americans say what is good for the world economy is always good for the U.S. economy. Twelve percent (12%) of voters continue to believe that the United States should be the world's policeman. Still, most voters (54%) say America's allies should do what the United States wants.
