Forty-two percent (42%) of American voters believe that major lifestyle changes are needed to save the environment. But the latest Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey also finds that 44% disagree and say that such changes are not necessary. Thirteen percent (13%) are not sure. Most women (52%) say lifestyle changes are needed while most men (59%) disagree. Most Democrats (57%) also believe that saving the environment will require major changes in the way we live. The majority of Republicans (58%) do not. As for those not affiliated with either major political party, 36% believe lifestyle changes will be necessary, while 49% take the opposite view. The survey found a similar divide on the question of whether American consumerism is to blame for the planet’s environmental problems. Forty percent (40%) blame the U.S. consumer mentality and 43% do not. Oregon Governor Ted Kulongoski recently asserted that Americans will need to cut back on their consumerism —“ “Other than taxes,” the governor said, “the hardest thing I find to talk with my constituents and my citizens about is about changing lifestyles.” Voters under 30 were more likely than their elders to blame American consumerism. Congress is currently consider so-called “cap-and-trade” legislation to address environmental issues, but hardly any voters know what that means. Voters are strongly opposed to higher gas taxes as a way to encourage the purchase of more fuel efficient cars. Consumers also lack enthusiasm for buying hybrid cars as a way to help the environment. The reviews are mixed for a congressional cash-for-clunkers program. But 47% of voters are willing to pay more for "green" goods and services if it means a cleaner environment.
