Few Americans Paying Attention to DC Madam Story

The DC Madam and her phone records with 10,000 clients has created quite a stir in the nation’s capitol, but little interest in the nation at large. Just 10% of Americans say they’ve been following the story “Very Closely.” The latest Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey found that another 22% are following it “Somewhat Closely” while 63% are not paying much attention.

As for government officials revealed as a client of the Madam’s services, just 34% believe they should resign. Forty-five percent (45%) disagree while 21% are not sure.

The public is evenly divided as to whether the names of clients should be released by the media. Forty-three percent (43%) say they should be released while 40% disagree and 17% are not sure.

While these figures indicate that most Americans are not shocked by a sex scandal involving the political elite, they do not believe such behavior is the norm for most adults. Just 14% believe that most men hire a prostitute at some point while they are married. Among those who are married, only 9% believe married men generally hire a prostitute at some point along the way. There is no gender gap on this issue—the views of men and women are virtually identical.

Rasmussen Reports conducts ongoing surveys measuring the attitudes of Americans on the news of the day. Recent surveys have asked about gun control, the Supreme Court decision on partial-birth abortion, the FDA and food safety, the CIA and George Tenet’s book, and the subpoena’s issued to Condoleezza Rice. The latest updates can be found on the Rasmussen Reports home page.

Rasmussen Reports also regularly tracks public attitudes towards Congress, the War on Terror, and other topics. Rasmussen Reports also continuously updates favorability ratings and general election match-ups for all Democratic and Republican Presidential candidates along with ratings for Members of Congress, Other Political Figures, and Journalists.

Rasmussen Reports releases updated polling data on the Democrat Nomination Process every Monday and on the Republican contest every Tuesday. Results for the Generic Congressional Ballot are updated monthly.
