In the abstract, the McCain-Feingold Campaign Finance legislation earns solid support. Eighty-six percent (86%) of Americans say they have a favorable opinion of it while only 7% voice the opposite view.

The latest Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey also found that Americans generally support Supreme Court decisions. Sixty-one percent (61%) say they generally agree with the Court “all of the time” (33%) or “most of the time” (28%). Twenty-five percent (25%) say they agree with the Court some of the time while 10% agree only occasionally.

Last week, these views collided when the Supreme Court limited the reach of the McCain-Feingold regulations. The Court ruled that corporations, organizations and individuals can run television ads letting voters know the positions of members of Congress on issues of the day.

Most Americans, 58%, agree with the Court. The Rasmussen Reports survey found that 35% disagree.

Conservatives, by a 3-to-1 margin, agreed with the Court on this issue. However, self-identified liberals disagreed by a 53% to 34% margin.

Fifty-six percent (56%) of political moderates agreed with the ruling while 37% disagreed.

Those responses match the general attitudes towards Supreme Court rulings. Seventy-eight percent (78%) of Conservatives agree with the Supreme Court rulings at least most of the time. Fifty-seven percent (57%) of political moderates say the same along with just 44% of liberals.

On a partisan basis, 77% of Republicans agreed with the Court ruling on McCain-Feingold. So did 49% of Democrats and 47% of those not affiliated with either major political party.

Older voters tend to be more supportive than younger voters of the Court ruling on McCain-Feingold. Older voters also tend to generally agree with the Supreme Court more than younger voters.
