Fifty-four percent (54%) of U.S. voters worry more that the federal government will try to do too much to fix the economy rather than not enough. That’s up three points from a month ago and the highest level of concern found on this question since Barack Obama was elected president. A new Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey finds that just 37% are more worried that the federal government will not do enough in reacting to the nation’s current economic problems. That’s little changed from last month and down from a high of 44% in January. Last October, as the meltdown of Wall Street dominated the front pages, 63% worried that the government would do too much. By the first week of November, that number had fallen to 46% and it stayed below the 50% level for several months. (Historical data is available for Premium Members only) Among the nation’s Political Class, (70%) worry that the government will not do enough. As for those who hold populist or Mainstream views, an identical percentage (70%) fear the government will do too much. (See more on the Political Class/Mainstream divide). Men by a 62% to 33% margin worry that the government will do too much. Forty-eight percent (48%) of women agree but 39% worry that not enough will be done. Sixty percent (61%) of African-Americans fear the government will not try to do enough to help the economy, while 61% of whites have the opposite concern. Seventy-seven percent (77%) of Republicans and 66% of voters not affiliated with either major party worry the government will take too much action, but 60% of Democrats worry it won’t do enough.
Most voters (53%) believe increases in government spending hurt the economy Fifty-five percent (55%) of voters blame President George W. Bush for the bad economy, but 39% say Obama’s policies are at fault. Eighty percent (80%) of Americans say current economic conditions in the country are at least somewhat likely to lead to increased crime. Most voters believe it would be better to do nothing than to pass the health care reform legislation currently working its way through Congress. Seventy-six percent (76%) say it is at least somewhat likely taxes will have to be raised on the middle class to cover the cost of the health care reform plan, but 54% think middle class tax cuts are more important than new spending on health care. Only six percent (6%) of voters nationwide now expect their own taxes to go down during the Obama years. During Election 2008, then-candidate Obama promised to cut taxes for 95% of Americans.
