New Jersey Republicans pick their gubernatorial candidate on Tuesday, and the latest Rasmussen Reports polling in the state shows Chris Christie leading Steve Lonegan by 11 points, 46% to 35%.

Four percent (4%) of GOP voters prefer some other candidate, and 15% are undecided on how they will vote.

In the previous survey in mid-May, Christie topped Lonegan 39% to 29%, with 29% undecided.

Lonegan, the former mayor of Bogota, leads Christie among voters age 30 to 49, but Christie has comparable leads among older and younger voters.

Conservative Republicans in the state are evenly divided between the two candidates, but party moderates favor Christie by sizable margins.

Seventy percent (70%) of New Jersey Republicans have a favorable opinion of Christie, including 20% whose view is Very Favorable. Just 22% have an unfavorable view of the former federal prosecutor.

Sixty-two percent (62%) of GOP voters in the Garden State regard Lonegan favorably, with 24% Very Favorable. Twenty-eight percent (28%) have an unfavorable opinion of the ex-mayor.

The winner of Tuesday’s GOP primary will face the state’s unpopular Democratic governor, Jon S. Corzine, who is seeking a second term. In mid-May, Corzine was viewed favorably by 44% of all New Jersey voters and unfavorably by 53%.

In the same survey, Corzine trailed Christie by nine points in a match-up between the two but was virtually tied when pitted against Lonegan. However, these numbers were an improvement for Corzine from March.

Not surprisingly, Republican voters in New Jersey have an even lower opinion of the incumbent governor. Just 15% have a favorable view of Corzine. The identical number of GOP voters (15%) approve of the job he is doing, but 84% disapprove.

New Jersey polls often show GOP candidates doing well in the spring, but the Democrat catches up as the November election approaches. A Republican has not won a statewide election in the state since 1997.
