Election 2008: Rhode Island Senate
Rhode Island Senate: Reed Safe in Re-Election Bid
Monday, July 07, 2008
Rhode Island Senator Jack Reed (D) appears to have nothing to worry about in his bid for re-election this year. The latest Rasmussen Reports telephone survey in the state finds him leading Republican challenger Bob Tingle 72% to 20%. Reed, who has served in the Senate since 1997, earns support from 90% of Rhode Island Democrats, 34% of Republicans and 65% of unaffiliated voters. Tingle, who was nominated in the 2002 election, is backed by 64% of Republicans, 6% of Democrats and 23% of unaffiliated voters. Three out of four voters (75%) in Rhode Island have a favorable view of the incumbent, while just 20% hold an unfavorable view of him. Tingle is much less known to voters; he is viewed favorably by 26%, unfavorably by 35%, and 39% have no opinion of the challenger. Rasmussen Markets data shows that Reed is currently given a % chance of being re-elected in November. These figures are updated on a 24/7 basis by market participants (it costs nothing to join). In Rhode Island’s presidential race, Barack Obama enjoys a big lead in the historically blue state. Rhode Island’s Governor Don Carcieri (R) earns good or excellent ratings from 40% of the state’s voters. Twenty-seven percent (27%) say he is doing a poor job as governor.
