The latest Rasmussen Reports telephone survey in Maine found Republican Senator Susan Collins leading Democratic Congressman Tom Allen 54% to 38% in her bid for re-election.

Collins leads Allen by twenty points among men and seventeen points among women. She also enjoys a twenty-point lead among unaffiliated voters in the Pine Tree state.

Collins earns support from 78% of conservative voters, 55% of moderate voters and 32% of liberal voters.

The incumbent is viewed favorably by 72% and unfavorably by 27%. Allen’s numbers are 59% favorable, 34% unfavorable.

In Maine’s presidential election, both potential Democratic candidates lead John McCain.

Forty-three percent (43%) of Maine voters see the economy as the top issue in Election 2008. Just 11% of Maine voters rate the economy as good or excellent, while over half (53%) rate it as poor. The overwhelming majority (81%) believe the economy is only going to get worse.

The War in Iraq is the top issue for 22% of Maine voters. While 40% say the U.S. and its allies are winning the War on Terror, 30% say the terrorists are winning. That is slightly more pessimistic than the national average. Nearly half (45%) of voters think the situation in Iraq will get worse while just 30% say it will improve in that time.
