Collins Ahead by 13 in Maine Senate Race
Friday, September 19, 2008
Incumbent Republican Senator Susan Collins still has a double-digit lead over her Democratic challenger, Tom Allen, in the latest Rasmussen Reports telephone survey of voters in Maine. Last month, she jumped out to a 15-point lead from a seven-point spread the month before. Collins, who is seeking a third term in the Senate, is supported by 89% of Maine Republicans and 23% of Democrats. Allen, currently a member of the House of Representatives, is backed by 74% of Democrats and 10% of GOP voters. Unaffiliated voters favor Collins by double digits, largely unchanged from a month ago. Two-thirds (66%) have a favorable view of Collins, while 55% say the same of Allen. But 40% have an unfavorable view of the Democrat versus 32% who feel that way about the Republican.
While women are evenly divided over the two candidates, male voters prefer Collins 63% to 35%. Maine Governor John Baldacci, a Democrat, earns good or excellent ratings from 32% of voters while 36% say he is doing a poor job.
