Georgia Senate: Chambliss Maintains Lead
Thursday, September 18, 2008
There’s little change in the Georgia’s U.S. Senate race between Republican Senator Saxby Chambliss and his Democratic challenger, Jim Martin. The latest Rasmussen Reports telephone survey in the Peach State finds the incumbent ahead of his challenger 50% to 43% (see crosstabs). That’s similar to results from a month ago. Chambliss has held a solid lead all year, but the race tightened when Martin was finally selected as the Democratic challenger. Typically, incumbents who poll below the 50% level of support are considered potentially vulnerable and support for Chambliss is not as solid as he might like. However, he is far from being the most vulnerable GOP senator in this year’s round of elections. Many Republican Senate seats are potentially in play for Democrats including seats in Alaska, New Hampshire, Oregon, New Mexico, Colorado, Mississippi, Minnesota, and Virginia. Chambliss picks up votes from 91% of Republicans and Martin is backed by 91% of Democrats. Among unaffiliated voters, Chambliss has a modest advantage once again this month. The incumbent senator is viewed favorably by 59% and Martin gets favorable reviews from 49%. For both men, those figures reflect a two-point improvement over the past month. Rasmussen Markets data suggests that Chambliss has a % chance of winning re-election in November. These results are updated on a 24/7 basis by market participants. It costs nothing to join and add your voice to the collective wisdom. Georgia Republican Governor Sonny Perdue earns good or excellent ratings from 49%, up two points from a month ago.
Rasmussen Reports has released polls on the presidential race this week for Colorado, Florida, New York, Ohio, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Virginia, Wisconsin, Utah and Delaware.
