The race for Wisconsin’s ten Electoral College votes was extraordinarily close in both Election 2000 and Election 2004. A new Rasmussen Reports telephone survey finds that it could be close again in Election 2008.

Democratic frontrunner Hillary Clinton finds herself in a toss-up with three Republican hopefuls in the poll. When matched against Rudy Giuliani, it’s Clinton 43% Giuliani 42%. The former First Lady has a three point edge over both Fred Thompson (44% to 41%) and John McCain (43% to 40%). However, she leads Mitt Romney by ten, 45% to 35%.

In 2004, John Kerry won the state by just 11,000 votes out of nearly three million total votes. Four years earlier, Al Gore won by just 5,000 votes.

Clinton is the clear frontrunner for the Democratic Presidential Nomination. Giuliani and Thompson lead the GOP field.

John McCain gets the best personal reviews in Wisconsin—54% offer a favorable opinion of the man once considered the GOP frontrunner. Giuliani is viewed favorably by 52%, Clinton by 51% and Thompson by 50%. Mitt Romney lags in this category and is viewed favorably by 40%.

Thirty-seven percent (37%) of Republicans say that Giuliani offers the GOP the best chance to win in Wisconsin. Twenty-two percent (22%) say Thompson is the most electable in the state.

The survey was conducted in partnership with Fox Television Stations, Inc.

Among Democrats, Hillary Clinton is overwhelmingly seen as the best candidate to keep their party’s Wisconsin winning streak alive.

Wisconsin voters have a healthy perspective on the campaign process. If they had a choice between meeting their favorite candidate at a fundraising event or getting great seats to Brett Favre’s final Packers’ game, 66% picked the football tickets. Only 19% opted for the fundraising luncheon.

Thirty-six percent (36%) of Wisconsin voters say President Bush is doing a good or excellent job while 46% give him poor marks. For Governor Jim Doyle, the grades are a bit better—38% good or excellent and 32% poor. Twenty-nine percent (29%) offer an in between assessment and say the Governor is doing a fair job.
