Poll: 50% Would Definitely Vote Against Gingrich

If former House Speaker Newt Gingrich (R) is on the 2008 ballot for President, 50% of that nation’s Likely Voters way they will definitely vote against him. That’s the highest total for any Presidential candidate. Seventy-two percent (72%) of Democrats would definitely vote against Gingrich along with 51% of unaffiliated voters and 23% of Republicans.

Second place for this dubious distinction goes to another politician Americans came to know in the 1990s, New York Senator Hillary Clinton (D). Forty-six percent (46%) of Likely Voters say they’d definitely vote against the former First Lady. No other political leader faces such solid opposition from more than 40% of Likely Voters (see prior story on Clinton’s numbers). An earlier Rasmussen Reports poll of these polarizing figures found Clinton leading Gingrich 50% to 43%.

At the other extreme, just 28% say they would definitely vote against former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani (R) and current New Mexico Governor Bill Richardson (D). However, 31% say they’d definitely vote for Giuliani making him the only candidate with more solid support than opposition. Only 10% say they’d definitely vote for Richardson.

Senator Sam Brownback (R) joins Gingrich with the most negative net numbers. For Brownback, just 6% say they’ll definitely vote for him while 36% say they’ll definitely vote against him. That’s a net negative total of 30 points. Gingrich gets to the same net number as 20% say they’d definitely vote for him. Delaware Senator Joe Biden (D) comes close to the net negatives of Brownback and Gingrich. Twelve percent (12%) would definitely vote for him while 38% would definitely vote against.

Giuliani leads in polls for the Republican Presidential nomination. He also leads every Democrat in general election polls including Clinton, Obama, Edwards, Richardson, and Biden.

Clinton leads in the race for the Democratic nomination. She trails Giuliani in general election match-ups, is even with McCain, and leads Romney, Gingrich, Hagel, and Brownback.
