In Pennsylvania, Senator Hillary Clinton has opened a double digit lead over four Republican Presidential candidates. The survey, conducted before Tuesday night’s Democratic debate, reflects a big improvement for the former First Lady from a month ago. Arizona Senator John McCain has struggled in the race for the Republican Presidential nomination, but is the closest Republican to Clinton in the Keystone State. It’s Clinton over McCain by ten, 48% to 38%. Former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani trails Clinton by thirteen points in Pennsylvania, 52% to 39%. Nationally, Clinton and Giuliani are in a toss-up. In Pennsylvania, Clinton leads former Tennessee Senator Fred Thompson 52% to 36% and former Arkansas Governor Mike Huckabee 54% to 31%. Clinton is viewed favorably by 57% in Pennsylvania, Giuliani by 55% and McCain by 53%. Thompson gets positive reviews from 44%, Huckabee from 36%. Compared to a month ago, Clinton is up a few points and Giuliani down five. Thompson and McCain show little change while Huckabee was not included in last month’s poll. Pennsylvania has cast its Electoral College votes for the Democrats in four straight Presidential elections, but the competition has recently been too close for any Democrat to take for granted. In Election 2004, John Kerry won the state by just three percentage points. The survey found that 65% of Pennsylvania voters want U.S. troops out of Iraq within a year. That’s little changed from 63% a month ago and somewhat above the national average. Thirty-two percent (32%) believe they should stay until the mission is complete. Sixty-eight percent (68%) say that it is Very Important for the government to improve its enforcement of the borders and reduce illegal immigration. Twenty-five percent (25%) say the same about legalizing the status of illegal workers already in the country. By a 58% to 34% margin, Pennsylvania voters support a smoking ban in all public places. Sixty-nine percent (69%) also favor a ban on using handheld wireless devices while driving. However, 61% believe people should be allowed to talk on a cell phone while driving. Just 37% believe drivers should be allowed to eat fast food meals while behind the wheel. Fifty percent (50%) say no, that shouldn’t be allowed. On both the use of cell phones and fast food meals while driving, younger adults were far more lenient than their elders. The survey was conducted in partnership with Fox Television Stations, Inc. Forty-five percent (45%) of voters say that Governor Ed Rendell is doing a good or an excellent job while 22% rate his performance as poor. Thirty-one percent (31%) offer a more neutral assessment and say he is doing a fair job. The numbers are bleaker for President Bush. Just 30% in the Keystone State say he is doing a good or an excellent job while 54% rate his performance as poor. See survey questions and top-line results.
