New Mexico: Obama and McCain Tied at 44%

The latest Rasmussen Reports telephone survey of New Mexico voters found Barack Obama and John McCain tied at 44% in a general election match-up.

If Hillary Clinton is the democratic nominee, McCain holds a twelve point lead, 50% to 38%.

Obama performs stronger than McCain among unaffiliated voters in the state. While half (50%) of unaffiliated voters would choose Obama, 32% would vote for McCain.

Obama also outperforms McCain among young voters. Over half (53%) of voters between the ages of 18 and 29 would vote for Obama, while McCain earns support from 33%. McCain draws more support than his opponent from voters over the age of 50.

Fifty-seven percent (57%) have a favorable view of Obama, while 41% view him unfavorably. McCain is viewed favorably by 56% and unfavorably by 38%. Clinton earns positive reviews from 42% and negative reviews from 55%.

Clinton leads McCain 49% to 46% among voters who think the economy is the top issue in the presidential election. Obama leads McCain 50% to 38% in the same category. The economy is seen as the most important issue by 32% of New Mexico voters.

When it comes to the War in Iraq, 68% of voters who see it as the most important issue choose Obama, while 24% would vote for McCain.

Rasmussen Markets data just prior to the release of this poll showed that Democrats are favored to carry New Mexico in the general election (current prices: Democrat % Republican %).
