Iowa: Obama 46% McCain 42%

In Iowa, the latest Rasmussen Reports telephone survey finds Barack Obama leading John McCain 46% to 42%. However, McCain leads Hillary Clinton 51% to 36%. Those results are similar to the previous election poll. McCain leads Clinton by a two-to-one margin among unaffiliated voters. However, Obama leads McCain 46% to 37% among those same voters. Rasmussen Markets shows that Democrats are currently given a % chance of winning Iowa’s Seven Electoral College Votes this fall. George W. Bush won the state by 10,000 votes out of 1.5 million in Election 2004. Four years earlier, he lost the state to Al Gore by 5,000 votes. Immediately prior to release of this poll, Iowa was rated as “Leans Democrat” in the Rasmussen Reports Balance of Power Calculator. McCain is viewed favorably by 58% of Iowa voters, Obama by 54%, and Clinton by 37%. Nationally, McCain has the highest favorability ratings of the three candidates. He leads both Obama and Clinton in the Rasmussen Reports daily Presidential Tracking Poll. In Iowa, 40% say that the economy is the most important voting issue of Election 2008. Twenty-one percent (21%) say it’s the War on Terror. Eighteen percent (18%) rate the U.S. economy as good or excellent, 39% say fair, and 42% believe that economic conditions are poor. Those figures are similar to the national average. Seven percent (7%) of Iowa voters say the economy is getting better while 75% say it is getting worse. Forty-eight percent (48%) say that the U.S. and its allies are winning the War on Terror while 20% believe the terrorists are winning. Those figures are very close to the national average. Thirty-nine percent (39%) believe that the situation will get better in Iraq over the next six months while 31% say it will get worse. Sixty-six percent (66%) say that American society is generally fair and decent. Among these voters, McCain leads Obama by fifteen percentage points. Twenty percent (20%) say that American society is generally unfair and discriminatory. Among these voters, Obama leads McCain by a five-to-one margin. See question wording and toplines.
