While pundits and analysts have pored over the details of Mitt Romney’s speech last week, nearly half the nation’s voters could not identify which Republican had given a major speech on faith and religion. A Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey found that 60% were able to identify Romney as that candidate. That figure includes 66% of Republicans nationwide, but just 52% of Evangelical Christian voters.

Overall, 69 % of voters can identify Romney as the candidate who is a Mormon. Among Republicans, that figure is 75%. It’s interesting to note that Evangelical Christians are somewhat less likely than the population at large to know of Romney’s faith. Among Evangelical Christians, 65% were able to identify Romney as the Mormon.

Twenty-three percent (23%) of all voters say that a candidate’s faith or religion is Very Important in determining their vote. That figure jumps to 32% among Republicans and 45% among Evangelical Christians.

Twenty-seven (27%) of all voters say they could vote for a candidate who states that he does not believe in God. Only 13% of Evangelical Christians and 19% of Catholic voters hold that view. Nineteen percent (19%) of Republicans could vote for a candidate who does not believe in God. Among Democrats, that figure is 32%.

The survey also found that 23% of the nation’s likely voters are Evangelical Christians. Another 27% are other Protestants while 22% are Catholic.

The issue of faith and religion has been much discussed in recent weeks as Mike Huckabee has taken over the lead in Iowa and South Carolina. He has also moved near the top in national polling and in Michigan. Huckabee is a former Baptist preacher.
