Montana Governor: Schweitzer Safe in Bid for Re-Election
Saturday, July 05, 2008
Montana Governor Brian Schweitzer (D) shouldn’t worry too much about keeping his job this November. The latest Rasmussen Reports telephone survey in the Treasure State finds the incumbent leading Republican State Senator Roy Brown 61% to 32%. Libertarian candidate Stan Jones earns just 3% support. Schweitzer, who has served as Governor since 2005, leads 61% to 30% among men in Montana and 60% to 34% among women. The incumbent draws support from 96% of Democrats and 25% of Republicans. Brown is backed by 68% of Republicans and 3% of Democrats. Among unaffiliated voters, Schweitzer has a 59% to 25% advantage. The governor’s approval ratings are also strong. Sixty-four percent (64%) of Montana voters give Schweitzer good or excellent ratings, while just 14% say he is doing a poor job as governor. He is viewed favorably by 71% of voters and unfavorably by 27%. Brown is viewed favorably by 37% and unfavorably by 41%. Jones’ numbers are 19% favorable, 42% unfavorable, and 39% have no opinion. Rasmussen Markets data shows that Schweitzer is currently given a % chance of being re-elected in November. These figures are updated on a 24/7 basis by market participants (it costs nothing to join). In Montana’s Presidential race, Barack Obama has paid more attention to the state than any recent Democrat and appears to be making the state competitive. See survey questions and toplines.
