Despite some gains made by Democratic challenger Dale Groutage, incumbent Republican Senator Craig Thomas maintains his lead in Wyoming’s U.S. Senate race according to the most recent Rasmussen Reports election survey of 500 likely voters. Thomas is favored by voters 59% to 32%; his lead in April’s poll was 64% to 25%.

Thomas’ favorability ratings are holding steady at 68% (no change since April) while Groutage has picked up seven points to register a favorable rating of 39%. Still, Groutage has failed to shrink the number of voters who hold no opinion of him--35% of all voters currently indicating they aren’t sure what they think of him--including 31% of his fellow Democrats.

In the governor’s race, incumbent Governor Dave Freudenthal continues to top Republican challenger Ray Hunkins with a 58% to 29% lead. The governor’s overall favorability ratings remain high, registering in at 78% among all voters according to the current results. He also continues to rank highly among GOP voters, garnering a 73% favorable rating from this segment.

Hunkins has gained noticeable ground among his party faithful. The challenger is now viewed favorably by 56% of GOP voters, up from 42% in April.

Among Wyoming voters, President Bush is registering nearly even numbers from those holding definitive opinions of his job performance. Thirty-eight percent (38%) of voters strongly approve of the president’s job performance, countered by 34% who strongly disapprove.
