Our latest poll of Kansas voters shows the incumbent Democrat, Kathleen Sebelius, leading former state House Speaker Robin Jennison 47% to 36% and leading State Senator Jim Barnett 45% to 37%. Sebelius is viewed favorably by 62% of likely voters (a slight decline since our last poll), and by 52% of Republicans. She also is preferred over Jennison by 26% of Republicans, and gets the nod over Barnett from 24% of Republicans. Despite her advantages, the governor has yet to reach the 50% threshold of support below which incumbents are regarded as potentially vulnerable. Moreover, since January her lead has narrowed by three points against each Republican vying for her job. Governor Sebelius continues to enjoy quite strong support (83%) from voters who strongly disapprove of how President Bush is doing his job. That number is the same whether Sebelius is matched up with Jennison or with Barnett. More Kansans trust President Bush over congressional Democrats on both Iraq and the economy than do voters of many states we've polled. Sixty-four percent (64%) say they trust the President more when it comes to Iraq, with only 26% saying they trust the Democrats more. And 57% say they trust President Bush more when it comes to the economy. Additional data from this survey, including crosstabs, is available to Premium Members.
