Although Kansas Governor Kathleen Sebelius (D) does not currently attract more than 50% support when matched up with her Republican opponents, she is maintaining strong but slightly narrower leads over them. Sebelius now leads former state House Speaker Robin Jennison 50% to 33%, a two-point shaving of the gap between them. The governor leads State Senator Jim Barnett 49% to 37%. Last month, Sebelius led Barnett 50% to 37%. The incumbent is viewed favorably by 68% of likely voters, unfavorably by 28%. Only 7% view her Very Unfavorably. When it comes to job performance, 64% of voters approve of how the governor is doing; 35% disapprove. Neither Jennison nor Barnett quite reach a 40% favorable rating. And, so far, more than a third of all voters don't register an opinion of them either way, indicating a harder uphill battle for name recognition than we're seeing for statewide challengers elsewhere in the country. Kansas is heavily Republican-leaning, but even in this thoroughly "red" state, the GOP cannot escape the low esteem in which the Bush Administration is now held. Forty-nine percent of Kansas voters approve of the President's job performance, while 50% disapprove. That's a respectable showing for the President only by comparison with other states. Fifty-nine percent (59%) of Kansas voters say tax increases hurt the economy; 58% say tax cuts help the economy. Seventy-nine percent (79%) are following news of the immigration debate, and 70% agree that securing the nation's borders and enforcing existing immigration law should come ahead of any further reforms. Thirty-four percent (34%) assent to the view that all illegal aliens in the country should be forced to leave; 46% disagree. Sixty percent (60%) disagree that the child of an illegal alien should automatically become a citizen. The rolling average of the last three Rasmussen Reports election polls in Kansas shows Sebelius ahead of Jennison 49% to 34%. She leads Barnett in the three-poll average 48% to 37%.
