Democrat Mike Beebe is maintaining a narrow lead, 46% to 40%, over Republican Asa Hutchinson in the race to succeed Governor Mike Huckabee. At present, Beebe and Hutchinson are the candidates most likely to square off in November. Governor Huckabee, also a Republican, is prevented by term limits from seeking re-election. Huckabee is a popular executive, but voters may be ready to flip his seat to a Democrat. In 1998 many supported both the Republican governor and the Democratic candidate for Senator, Blanche Lambert Lincoln. She was then handily reelected. Asa Hutchinson is viewed favorably by 53% of likely voters. Arkansas Attorney General Mike Beebe is viewed favorably by 55%. Beebe will doubtless rather be seen on the campaign trail with the former President than with the current junior Senator from New York. Bill Clinton, a former governor of the state, is viewed favorably by 56% of likely voters. Only 44% view Hillary Clinton favorably. Fifty-seven percent (57%) of Arkansas voters believe Judge Samuel Alito's nomination to the Supreme Court should be confirmed. Sixty-one percent (61%) favor building a barrier along the U.S.-Mexico border to help combat illegal immigration. Forty-seven percent (47%) say bringing the troops home from Iraq is more important than stabilizing the country, while 44% say stabilizing it should be the priority.
