Election 2008: New Hampshire Senate
Shaheen Leads Sununu by Eight in New Hampshire

With just four days left until Election Day, Democrat Jeanne Shaheen still leads Republican Senator John Sununu in New Hampshire’s U.S. Senate race. The latest Rasmussen Reports telephone survey in the state finds the Democrat ahead 52% to 44% (see crosstabs).

The latest poll is more good news for Shaheen, who led the incumbent by six points a week ago. The Democrat has held substantial leads in 11 of 12 surveys conducted since this campaign season began.

Shaheen leads by twelve percentage points among unaffiliated voters. She also holds a 58% to 36% lead among women in New Hampshire. Men, however, are more evenly divided and slightly favor Sununu by a 50% to 47% margin.

Shaheen, the first woman governor of New Hampshire, served from 1997 to 2003. Sununu, who at 44 is the youngest U.S. Senator, is currently seeking his second term in the legislature.

The challenger is viewed favorably by 55% and unfavorably by 43%. Sununu’s ratings are 51% favorable, 46% unfavorable.

New Hampshire is far from the only Republican Senate seat at risk this season. Democrats are hoping for pick-ups in Alaska, Oregon, New Mexico, Colorado, Mississippi, Minnesota, North Carolina, Georgia, Kentucky, and Virginia.

Rasmussen Markets data suggests that Shaheen has a % chance of winning New Hampshire’s Senate race in November. These results are updated on a 24/7 basis by market participants. It costs nothing to join and add your voice to the collective wisdom.

Governor John Lynch earns good or excellent ratings from 61% of voters, while just 11% give his job performance a poor rating.

The latest numbers from New Hampshire’s presidential election will be released today at 3 p.m.
