Michigan Senate: Levin Holds on to Solid Lead

Michigan Senator Carl Levin continues to enjoy a comfortable lead over Republican challenger Jack Hoogendyk in his race for re-election, the latest Rasmussen Reports telephone survey in the state found.

Levin has a twenty-point lead over the state legislator, 55% to 35%. Those numbers have chanced little since last month, when the democrat led 54% to 37%.

Levin has served in the United States Senate for the past thirty years. He has won each of his last three re-election bids with 58% to 60% of the vote. He has not faced a serious election threat since 1984.

While holding just a three-point lead among men, Levin has a thirty-five point lead among women. When it comes to voters not affiliated with either major political party, Levin leads Hoogendyk 54% to 33%.

Levin is viewed favorably by 58% and unfavorably by 35%. Those numbers have improved modestly over the past month. Hoogendyk’s numbers are 39% favorable, 29% unfavorable, while 33% are not sure. The challenger’s numbers have changed little over the past month.

The majority (73%) of Michigan voters say they have been following news stories on Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick after it was revealed he and his chief of staff lied under oath about their sexual relationship during a whistle-blower trial last August. Seventy-eight percent (78%) of those voters believe the mayor should resign, while just 8% disagree.

The Wolverine State’s governor, Jennifer Granholm, earns good or excellent ratings from 30% of Michigan voters. Thirty-nine percent (39%) say she is doing a poor job as governor.
