Harkin Still Well Ahead in Iowa

Incumbent Democrat Tom Harkin continues to hold a solid lead over Republican challenger Chris Reed in Iowa's U.S. Senate race. The latest Rasmussen Reports telephone survey in the state finds Harkin leading 57% to 41%.

Harkin has expanded his lead somewhat from late September,, when he led by 14 points. The senator has been well ahead since tracking of the race began in June.

Harkin is seeking his fifth term in the Senate. In his last re-election bid, Harkin beat his Republican opponent, Greg Ganske, 54% to 44%. Reed is a Navy veteran and businessman.

The race is noticeably close among unaffiliated voters, with Harkin holding just a 49% to 46% lead. Last month, the senator led by 15 points among these voters. The race also continues to be close among men, with Harkin ahead 50% to 48%. In September, the candidates were separated by just one point among men. Harkin still has a big lead among women, 64% to 35%.

Harkin is viewed favorably by 62% and unfavorably by 38%. Reed’s ratings are 47% favorable, 30% unfavorable. Nearly a quarter of voters (23%) still have no opinion of the challenger.

Governor Chet Culver, a Democrat, earns good or excellent marks from 45% of Iowa voters, while 22% give his job performance a poor rating.

Barack Obama continues to hold an eight-point lead over John McCain in Iowa’s presidential race.

No Democratic Senate seats now appear to be at risk, but Republican seats in Alaska,New Hampshire, Oregon, New Mexico, Colorado, Georgia, Mississippi, North Carolina and Virginia are in play as Democrats push for a 60-member filibuster-proof Senate. This telephone survey of 500 Likely Voters was conducted by Rasmussen Reports on October 23, 2008. The margin of sampling error for the survey is +/- 4.5 percentage points with a 95% level of confidence.
