Colorado Senate: Udall 47% Schaffer 43%

Democrat Mark Udall is still narrowly ahead of Republican Bob Schaffer in the race to become Colorado’s next United States Senator. The latest Rasmussen Reports telephone survey in the state finds Udall up 47% to 43% this month. When “leaners” are included, it’s a three-point advantage for the Democrat, 49% to 46%.

Last month, Rep. Udall enjoyed a nine-point lead over Shaffer. In May, he led by six. Prior to May, the race had been essentially even.

Udall and Schaffer are competing for the right to replace Republican Senator Wayne Allard.

Among unaffiliated voters, Udall leads by just four percentage points. A month ago, he held a twenty-one point lead among these voters.

Both candidates are viewed favorably by 54% of Colorado voters. Those ratings represent a seven-point improvement for Schaffer but a two-point decline for Udall.

In Colorado’s Presidential election, Barack Obama leads John McCain.

Governor Bill Ritter (D) earns good or excellent ratings from 41% of Colorado voters. A quarter (25%) say he is doing a poor job as governor.

This telephone survey of 500 Likely Voters was conducted by Rasmussen Reports July 21, 2008. The margin of sampling error for the survey is +/- 4.5 percentage points with a 95% level of confidence.
