Washington Governor: Gregoire Ahead by Six

Washington’s governor race has changed little over the past month. Incumbent Governor Christine Gregoire (D) has fallen just below the 50% level of support but is leading Republican challenger Dino Rossi. The latest Rasmussen Reports telephone survey in the state shows Gregoire attracting 49% of the vote while Rossie earns 43%. When “leaners” are included, Gregoire leads 52% to 44%.

The two candidates first faced each other in 2004, a contest so close that it ultimately went to the courts and was won by Gregoire under controversial circumstances.

Rossi is currently supported by 90% of Republicans, Gregoire by 88% of Democrats, and Rossi leads among unaffiliated voters, 47% to 36%. Gregoire leads by sixteen percentage point among women whild Rossi lead by six among men. .

Gregoire is viewed favorably by 56% and unfavorably by 42%. Her ratings have changed little since June. Rossi’s numbers are 50% favorable, down from 52% last month, and 45% unfavorable, up from 42% last month.

While viewed favorably by 56% of voters, just 45% say the Governor is doing a good or an excellent job. One in four voters (25%) say Gregoire is doing a poor job.

This telephone survey of 500 Likely Voters was conducted by Rasmussen Reports on July 9, 2008. The margin of sampling error for the survey is +/- 4.5 percentage points with a 95% level of confidence.
