Missouri Governor: Nixon Leads Hulshof by Twelve

Attorney General Jay Nixon leads Congressman Kenny Hulshof by a dozen points in the bid to become the next Governor of Missouri. The latest Rasmussen Reports telephone survey shows Nixon attracting 51% of the vote while Hulshof earns 39%. When “leaners” are included, it’s Nixon 53%, Hulshof 42%.

A month ago, Nixon held an eleven point lead over his Republican challenger.

Nixon is supported by 85% of Democrats and has a modest lead among the state’s unaffiliated voters. Eighty percent (80%) of Republicans say they will vote for Hulshof.

The Democratic Attorney General leads by sixteen percentage points among women and five points among men. Hulfshof attracts a majority of regular churchgoers but Nixon leads by forty points among those who rarely or never attend services.

Hulshof won the right to face Nixon after narrowly defeating State Treasurer Sarah Steelman in an August 5 Primary.

Nixon is viewed favorably by 61% of Missouri voters, up four points over the past month.

Hulshof is now viewed favorably by 55%, a thirteen-point improvement since capturing his party’s nomination.

Voter approval of Republican Gov. Matt Blunt, who in a surprise announcement in January chose not to seek re-election, remains steady this month. Just 34% rate his job performance good or excellent while 39% say he is doing a poor job. That latter figure is up five points over the past month.
