In Michigan, the latest Rasmussen Reports telephone survey finds Senator Hillary Clinton earning 49% or 50% of the vote against each of the top four Republican candidates. That’s par for the course in this Blue State as the Democratic nominee has won 51% or 52% of the vote in each of the last three election. Michigan has cast its Electoral College votes for the Democrats in four straight elections. With her current support, Clinton leads Republican frontrunner Rudy Giuliani by nine percentage points (49% to 40%), Mitt Romney by ten (49% to 39%), Fred Thompson by thirteen (50% to 37%), and John McCain by thirteen (49% to 36%). In other state polling, Romney is often the weakest of the GOP candidates when matched against Clinton. However, his father served as Governor of Michigan in the 1960s. The elder Romney had also been Chairman of the American Motors Corporation in an era of better times for the auto industry. When matched against the Republican contenders, Clinton earns from 51% to 53% support from women. Among men, she earns from 45% to 48%. Clinton is viewed favorably by 55% of voters in the state. That figure includes 26% with a Very Favorable opinion. Giuliani is viewed favorably by 52% and McCain by 50%. Forty-eight percent (48%) have a favorable opinion of Romney while 42% offer a positive assessment of Thompson. For question wording and responses, click here. Michigan’s economy has been devastated in recent years primarily due to auto industry struggles. The economic problems were enough to create some concerns for Governor Jennifer Granholm about her re-election prospects last year. In the end, however, she handily defeated GOP businessman Dick DeVos. Today, just 36% of Michigan voters say that Granholm is doing a good or an excellent job. An equal number say she is doing a poor job. Rasmussen Reports has recently released polling data featuring Clinton match-ups in Ohio, Florida, Colorado, Arkansas, New Hampshire, and Oregon. Clinton leads all Democrats seeking the party’s Presidential nomination in both national polls and in New Hampshire. Crosstabs available for Premium Members only.
