The latest Rasmussen Reports telephone survey of South Dakota voters finds Democratic Senator Tim Johnson enjoying substantial leads over two potential Republican candidates in the race for the United States Senate.

Johnson leads Steve Kirby 62% to 32% and Joel Dykstra 63% to 28% in head-to-head match-ups.

Senator Johnson received national attention in late 2006, when he began suffering from severe health problems. The possibility arose that he might step down. That would have led to a Republican filling his Senate Seat and returned control of the Senate to the GOP. However, Johnson’s health has improved and he is currently serving his duties as Senator.

Johnson is viewed favorably by 73% of South Dakota voters and unfavorably by 25%. Dykstra is viewed favorably by 35% and unfavorably by 39%, while 26% are unsure. Kirby earns positive reviews from 41%, negative reviews from 40% and 20% are not sure.
