Republican Presidential hopeful Rudy Giuliani continues to lead all Democrats in general election match-ups, but former North Carolina Senator John Edwards (D) has closed the gap to a statistically insignificant margin. The latest Rasmussen Reports Election 2008 survey finds Giuliani attracting 47% of the vote to 45% for Edwards. A month ago, Giuliani had an eight point lead, 49% to 41%.

Giuliani’s advantage over another Democrat, Senator Barack Obama, has also gotten smaller during the past month. The latest election poll shows Giuliani leading 46% to 40%. A month ago, he held a double digit lead, 50% to 39%.

Obama and Edwards have also gained ground recently against Senator John McCain (R). In fact, both Democrats now lead McCain.

Obama and Edwards narrowly outperform Senator Hillary Clinton (D) in general election trial heats. Clinton is essentially tied with McCain and trails Giuliani by 6.

Clinton currently is on top in polls for the Democrats’ 2008 Presidential nomination. Obama is in second and Edwards is the only other candidate to reach double digits. Despite the fact that Clinton and Obama earn support from half of all Democrats at the moment, 60% of Americans believe that the Democrats will eventually nominate a white male candidate.

On the Republican side, Giuliani is enjoying a growing lead in Primary polling. However, many pundits doubt that Giuliani will remain on top when voters come to learn more about his lifestyle and positions on key social issues.

John McCain is in second place among Republicans, but losing ground. His personal favorables have dropped from 59% in December to 52% today.
