Senator Hillary Clinton (D) now has the highest level of base support among the major candidates running for President. Twenty-nine percent (29%) say they would definitely vote for the former First Lady if she's on the ballot in 2008. However, Clinton is also just one point below the highest level of core opposition this month--46% say they would definitely vote against her. On that count, only Senator Joe Biden (D) scores higher (47% would definitely vote against Biden).

Clinton's numbers have changed little over the past month. In fact, attitudes toward her remain very steady. That's what you'd expect from someone who has held a very high profile on the national scene for fifteen years. But, other candidates have seen their numbers drop a bit over the past month.

Senator Barack Obama (D) enjoyed the highest level of base support in the previous two months. In both April and May, 33% said they'd definitely vote for the newcomer to the national scene. This month, just 28% are that committed to Obama. Also, the number who would definitely vote against the man from Illinois inched up to 40% this month.

Clinton and Obama remain the top two choices in polling for the Democratic Presidential Nomination. However, the man in third place has the best net numbers in terms of core support and opposition. Twenty-eight percent (28%) would defnitely vote for former Senator John Edwards while 32% would definitely vote against.

This is the first month that not a single candidate reached the 30% level of core support.

Former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani's (R) numbers held steady after slipping in the previous months. Twenty-six percent (26%) now say they will definitely vote for him and 37% who will definitely vote against. In March, 31% were planning to definitely vote for him while just 27% were definitely poised to vote against (see trends for all candidates).

The man who caught Giuliani in polling for the Republican Presidential nomination, former Senator Fred hompson (R), is less well known and has the lowest level of core opposition among all candidates in either party. Twenty-three percent (23%) will definitely vote for Thompson while 31% will defnitely vote against. Thompson's numbers have moved little over the past month.

Arizona Senator John McCain has taken a serious drubbing in poll after poll over the past month and this one is no different. Just 16% now say they'd definitely vote for the man once considered the frontrunner among Republicans. Forty-two percent (42%) will definitely vote against him. Those numbers are down sharply from 27% for and 37% against last month.
