The latest Rasmussen Reports survey of Maine voters finds Senator Kerry with 48% of the vote and President Bush with 44%. Four years ago, Al Gore defeated Bush to carry Maine by a 49% to 44% margin. One month ago, our survey found Kerry clinging to a one-point lead in this state. At that point, we considered Maine's Electoral Votes in the Toss-Up category. Then, a mid-month update provided to Premium Members showed Kerry opening up a modest lead. At that time, we moved the state to the "Leans Kerry" column. Now, we are moving Maine back to "Toss-Up" status. This early in the campaign, we consider any state where the candidates are within five points of each other to be a Toss-Up. Kerry has secured the vote from just 70% of Maine liberals. Bush is supported by 71% of the state's conservatives. Among moderates, Kerry leads 54% to 36%. In Maine, 48% of all voters Approve of the way President Bush is performing his job. That's down from a month ago and slightly below his national Job Approval rating. Among voters who are not affiliated with either major political party, 49% give the President's performance their Approval. Data for Maine will be updated again early next month.
