The race for Colorado's U.S. Senate seat remains as close as it can get. The latest Rasmussen Reports survey shows Republican Pete Coors with 49% of the vote and Democrat Ken Salazar with 48%.

Those figures are unchanged from our September 15 survey. In August, Salazar was leading, 49% to 45%. An earlier Rasmussen Reports survey, conducted shortly after Coors entered the race, showed Salazar with a 47% to 41% lead.

The candidates are campaigning for a seat currently held by popular Senator Ben Nighthorse Campbell. Had Campbell run for re-election, this would have been a safe Republican seat. But, earlier in the year, Campbell announced his retirement while citing health reasons.

Coors is now viewed favorably by 52% of Colorado voters. For Salazar, that number is 51%. Those numbers reflect a sharp decline compared to a month ago when both men were viewed favorably by 60%.

Coors favorables fell in the second half of September and Salazar took a slight lead at that time. Salazar's favorables have tumbled in the first half of October.

In the race for the White House, President Bush now leads Senator Kerry by five points in Colorado.
