The latest Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey found that 59% of Americans want the troops brought home from Iraq within a year. That’s down three points from a month ago and is the lowest number calling for troops to come home since March. Looked at from a longer perspective, however, there has been little change in attitudes towards a troop withdrawal since tracking of this question began last August. Twenty-five percent (25%) would like to see the troops brought home immediately while 34% say they should be brought home within a year. Thirty-five percent (35%) say the troops should stay until the mission is complete. That number has ranged from 31% to 39% since tracking began. More men than women believe the troops should stay in Iraq until the mission is completed. While 45% of men think the troops should remain in Iraq, just 26% of women agree. Half of men (50%) want to see troops home within the year, while 67% of women share the same view. When it comes to party affiliations, 82% of Democrats think the troops should come home within a year, along with just 28% of Republicans. Sixty-seven percent (67%) of GOP voters believe the troops should remain in Iraq until the mission is completed. Just 13% of Democrats agree. A separate Rasmussen poll released today found that more voters trust Democrats more than Republicans to handle the situation in Iraq. However, when names are inserted, John McCain has a twelve-point advantage over Barack Obama as to who voters trust more on the issue. Another survey found that half of adults believe a victory in Iraq is at least somewhat likely if McCain is elected president. The same survey found that most voters think the top priority in Iraq is getting the troops home. The survey was conducted in partnership with Fox Television Stations, Inc.
