A recent Rasmussen Reports telephone survey found that while many Americans are not fans of Russian President Vladimir Putin, not many are worried about a Russian attack on the United States.

Last week, Putin threatened to target nuclear missiles at Ukraine if it joined the missile defense system the United States has been trying to establish in Eastern Europe. Secretary of State Condoleeza Rice referred to his statement as “reprehensible.”

The survey found only 10% of Americans have a favorable view of Putin, while 47% have an unfavorable view and 44% are not sure.

However, 76% are not worried about Russia attacking the United States. Eighteen percent (18%) of Americans are somewhat worried about a Russian attack, and only 4% are very worried. Along the same lines, 27% are worried about a Russian attack on U.S. bases in Europe, while 70% are not worried.

Conservative voters tend to be slightly more worried about a Russian attack on the U.S. While 28% of conservatives are worried about an attack, only 15% of moderates and 19% of liberals have similar concerns.

Over half of adult voters (51%) have not followed news stories on Putin this week closely, while 49% have done so at least somewhat closely.

In a survey conducted in December 2007, most Americans did not agree with Time’s choice of Putin as Person of the Year. Only 4% of voters agreed with Time’s choice.
