The good news for Attorney General Alberto Gonzales is that the bad news hasn’t gotten any worse.

The latest Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey finds that 43% of American voters believe Gonzales should resign. Thirty-two percent (32%) disagree and say he should not resign while 25% are not sure. Those numbers have changed little over the past six weeks. Fifty-nine percent (59%) of Democrats believe he should resign along with 21% of Republicans and 45% of those not affiliated with either major party.

In March, among all voters, 39% said Gonzales should resign while 31% disagreed.

Public opinion of the Attorney General has stabilized at a dangerously low level. Twenty-seven percent (27%) now have a favorable opinion of Gonzales. Twice as many, 54%, have an unfavorable opinion. Those figures are essentially unchanged over the past six weeks.

The number with a Very Unfavorable opinion of Gonzales is up two points since March to 30%. Just 7% have a Very Favorable opinion, down from 8% in the previous survey.

While 42% believe the Attorney General should resign, 46% believe it is at least somewhat likely that he will resign. Just one-out-of-six Americans (16%) believe it is Very Likely.

Sixty percent (60%) say they are at least Somewhat Concerned about the firing of the U.S. attorneys. That’s up from 55% in March and includes 29% who are Very Concerned.

Interest in the story has increased. Sixty-five percent (65%) of Americans say they are following the stories surrounding Gonzales Somewhat or Very Closely.
