Despite being upset by the New York Giants in last year’s Super Bowl, the New England Patriots are still considered likely to win the championship this year, according to fans. The latest survey of 620 football fans found that 16% think Tom Brady’s Patriots will take home their fourth championship trophy since 2001. As for the reigning champions, just 4% of fans believe the Giants will take home another title this year. The Dallas Cowboys and Indianapolis Colts are tied with 13% of fans who think they will be this season’s champions. Just 3% of fans think the San Diego Chargers, who lost the Conference Championship game to the Patriots this year, will win the Super Bowl. However, the plurality of fans (37%) think the title will go to another team not mentioned in the survey. Despite who fans think will win the big game, both the Patriots and the Cowboys draw support from 13% of fans who want them to win. The Colts come in right behind with 10% of fans who want them to win the Super Bowl, followed by the Chargers and Giants with 4%. Though his team may not be top pick to win the Super Bowl this year, Peyton Manning is considered the best quarterback in the NFL by 41% of fans. One in four fans (25%) say Tom Brady is on top, while 14% say that of Peyton’s brother Eli of the Giants. No other quarterback received over 5% of the vote. Perhaps the biggest football story to break during the preseason was legendary quarterback Brett Favre deciding to return to the game for another year. After over a month of talks and speculation, Favre became the newest player for the struggling New York Jets. While the decision certainly received a lot of attention, 54% of fans think Favre should have stayed retired, while 32% disagree. On this question, more women (61%) than men (49%) thought the legend should stay out of the game for good. See survey questions and toplines. Crosstabs available for Premium Members only.
