As the final four teams battle it out in October, fans have chosen which players should win the top honors this season in Major League Baseball. A new Rasmussen Reports telephone survey of baseball fans found that 21% say Albert Pujols of the St. Louis Cardinals deserves the National League MVP, while 16% say Dustin Pedroia of the Boston Red Sox should win the award for the American League. Pujols finished second in the National League for batting average and fourth in runs batted in with 116. He also hit 37 home runs this season, tying four other players for fourth place in the league. Pedroia, who was last year’s Rookie of the Year, also finished the regular season in second place for both batting average and total runs. His team faces its first face off tonight against the Tampa Bay Rays in the start of the American League Championship Series. Ryan Howard of the Philadelphia Phillies came in a close second to Pujols for National League MVP with 19% of the vote from fans. Howard finished first in home runs and RBI’s after a strong second half showing. Recently traded Manny Ramirez, who has helped push the Los Angeles Dodgers to the playoffs this year, came in third with 14%. In the American League, Texas Ranger Josh Hamilton earned 10% of the vote from fans, while Kevin Youkalis of the Red Sox and powerhouse Cleveland pitcher Cliff Lee each earned 9% of the vote. For the Cy Young award, 21% of fans chose Lee for the American League. Lee tied for first in all of Major League Baseball with 22 wins and also finished second in earned run average. For the National League Cy Young, fans chose New York Met Johan Santana. Santana tops the majors in ERA and came in second in the National League for strikeouts. Just behind Santana for the National League Cy Young is Brandon Webb of the Arizona Diamondbacks, with 18% of the votes. Webb ties Lee for most wins in the Majors. Fourteen percent (14%) of fans chose Toronto pitcher Roy Halladay for the American League Cy Young, followed by veteran Yankees pitcher Mike Mussina with 13%. Data released yesterday found that 36% of baseball fans thing the Red Sox will win the World Series this year. See survey questions and toplines. Crosstabs available for Premium Members only.
