Most Say America Not Founded on Racism But See It As Serious Problem

Most Americans agree that racism is a problem in this country but reject the idea that America has been racist from the very start. They also tend to think we talk too much about racism these days.

A new Rasmussen Reports national telephone and online survey finds that just 32% of American Adults agree with this recent statement by Democratic presidential hopeful Robert Francis “Beto” O’Rourke – “Our country was founded on racism – and is still racist today.” Fifty-five percent (55%) disagree with that statement.  Thirteen percent (13%) are undecided. (To see survey question wording, click here.)

The survey of 1,000 American Adults was conducted on August 20-21, 2019 by Rasmussen Reports. The margin of sampling error is +/- 3 percentage points with a 95% level of confidence. Field work for all Rasmussen Reports surveys is conducted by Pulse Opinion Research, LLC. See methodology.
